Plantsvszombies.info® and Parata Systems named the winners of the 2018 Next-Generation Pharmacist® Awards yesterday at a ceremony held concurrently with the 2018 NCPA Annual Meeting in Boston, Massachusetts.

 The Next-Generation Pharmacist® Awards is a national program that salutes pharmacy professionals who are defining the industry’s future. GREATEST ACHIEVEMENTS
My greatest achievement in pharmacy practice so far has been the establishment of the successful Behavioral Health Clinical Pharmacy Program at the Department of Defense Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Landstuhl, Germany.

PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY
My personal philosophy is to genuinely care about the well-being and best interest of other people. I aspire to wake up every day and have a positive outlook.

VISION FOR PHARMACY
My vision is for the pharmacists to be each patient’s most trusted health care professional while inspiring healthier communities and integrating seamlessly into multidisciplinary teams at all levels of care.

I entered the profession of pharmacy because I had the desire to serve in the role of a readily accessible and knowledgeable health care professional who has an active role in the health of the community.

GREATEST ACHIEVEMENTS
My greatest achievements in pharmacy are directly related to my work in the mobile clinic. It is both an honor and a privilege to have the opportunity to provide quality health care to the medically underserved in my community.

PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY
I have both of these quotes hanging up in my office, and I truly try to embody them in all that I do: “Treat others the way you’d like to be treated.” “Throw kindness around like confetti.”

VISION FOR PHARMACY
My vision for the pharmacy profession is for pharmacist-provided services to continue to expand. Additionally, I would like to see more people having access to pharmacist-provided services, particularly those in medically underserved areas.

Growing up in Kenya, where everyday ailments can be fatal, shaped my desire to become an accessible health care professional who could help patients in my community with disease state awareness, management, and prevention.

My greatest achievements have been the creation of a successful community pharmacy and medical providers collaborative models for team-based care and teaching this model to others so they may succeed to transform their businesses and communities.

PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY
When God gives you lemons, don’t just stop at making lemonade; why not create a lemonade stand with lemon marmalade, scented oils, pies, and more? Never settle for the status quo!

VISION FOR PHARMACY
Pharmacists and their support staff will be recognized and reimbursed for all that they do every day to impact health care costs and improve patient outcomes.

I have always had an interest in how the human body works, and wanted to be in a profession that works to help people live better lives. As I’ve progressed in school, pharmacy has proven time and again to have great potential in helping patients reach and maintain their health goals, and that excites me as a future practitioner.

GREATEST ACHIEVEMENTS
My greatest achievements have been serving as the executive intern for the Iowa Pharmacy Association and as a pharmacy policy intern in the Iowa House of Representatives. Through both of these opportunities, I’ve been very fortunate to work under remarkable leadership and feel that our efforts have resulted in great strides for our profession.

PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY
I strive to live each day as a new opportunity to become a better version of myself, while leaving a positive impact on the people and environments I encounter.

VISION FOR PHARMACY
As we enter a value-based payment model in health care, I think pharmacists will be called upon more often to use their clinical judgment to optimize drug therapy, with those in the ambulatory care setting being utilized heavily in chronic disease management.

My greatest achievements have been initiating the HIV Specialty Network program for Walgreens in the Louisville, Kentucky, area and opening the first Walgreens Local Specialty Pharmacy in Kentucky.

PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY
Building trusting relationships and practicing with empathy are key to positive patient outcomes. I strive to raise the bar and advance the pharmacy profession by sharing experiences and knowledge through mentoring future and peer pharmacists.

In the 1970s, the United States was in turmoil. Many people had little or no resources to care for themselves or family. I believed that I could use my aptitude in math and science to help others by delivering care through pharmacy.

GREATEST ACHIEVEMENTS
My greatest pharmacy-related achievements include mentoring students and young pharmacists and technicians; helping to lead, create, and implement the Medicare Part D program; and delivering new, forward-thinking rules and regulations for the practice of pharmacy.

PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY
My philosophy can be summed up in the belief that it is our job to deliver on the needs and cares of others.

VISION FOR PHARMACY
I believe that together, we need to redesign the pharmacy distribution model to one that allows many of our extremely bright, highly trained PharmD colleagues to focus more on the delivery of direct patient care through cognitive skills than on the “do it the same way as we always have” model. We can and should do more.

My father, a pharmacist and hospital pharmacy director for more than 40 years, has served as a strong role model for me and my 2 younger brothers (also pharmacists) from an early age, instilling in us the significance of the pharmacist’s role in providing exemplary patient care and the criticality of ensuring safe and appropriate medication use.

I am proud and humbled to be able to serve as an advocate for the profession and the role of the pharmacist in all that I am responsible for in my day-to-day practice.

I wanted to continue to work in a health-related profession to provide excellent patient care after spending many years in dental hygiene. I have family and friends who are pharmacists and had the opportunity to follow in the pharmacy field.

GREATEST ACHIEVEMENTS
I was chosen to participate in a pharmacy technician immunization program in 2016 and was one of the first technician immunizers in Idaho. As the technician specialist for our pharmacy, I help keep the daily and monthly tasks running smoothly through inventory control, ordering, scheduling, and training.

PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY 
Be loyal to yourself and others, be of good moral character, and take time each day to enjoy your surroundings.

VISION FOR PHARMACY
I envision personalized medication for patients through genetic testing, providing better[adherence]and outcome for their overall health.

SOURCE OF INSPIRATION
While working as a veterinarian technician, I witnessed firsthand the amazing recoveries that animals experienced after being treated with medication, leading me to decide to change career paths.

GREATEST ACHIEVEMENTS
My greatest achievement has been working with my team to develop a 1-day dispense model, which reduces both medication administration errors and medication waste.

PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY
It is important to approach issues first from the perspective of the patient, then from the perspective of the customer, and finally from our own business needs. This approach generally leads to win-win solutions.

VISION FOR PHARMACY
I believe that our pharmacists’ cognitive services will be increasingly leveraged to improve outcomes.
